Captain Cook Hotel

Historic brewery ghost sign mural

view from the terrace

For the Captain Cook Hotel in Sydney, Steady Studio was commissioned to paint a courtyard mural reproducing a historic beer advertisement painted  to look as if it has been weathering on the walls for a century.

The mural draws on the rich history of breweries, when hand painted signage was a key part of advertising beer, before mass printing and vinyl ever existed. Using a variation of traditional signwriting techniques Lance created a dynamic surface with subtle variations in colour shifts and sheen, capturing the character and texture typical of a mural 100+ years old. The mural pays homage to both the pub’s history and the craft of traditional hand painted advertising that once defined the beer industry.
