The Atrium Apartments in Newcastle occupy a building with a rich past,  a former Mechanics Institute that once stood at the heart of the city’s working life. As part of the development’s transformation Steady Studio were brought in under the art direction of Dion Ackland and scenic painter Andy to hand paint a series of large scale ghost sign murals across the exterior walls.

Drawing on old advertisements and imagery from the late 1800s, the murals celebrate Newcastle’s industrial and commercial history from that era. Painted to look as though they had always been there-  faded, weathered and worn in the way only time should produce. The murals sit naturally against the renovated building, as if the renovation uncovered them rather than created them. It’s the kind of work that rewards a second glance.
